“The only reason people value traffic is that it can convert to sales or ad revenue.”
Not entirely true. I run a website. It’s pure vanity. The reason it exists is to give me an outlet for a part of me that needs it. That’s why I spend too much time writing and paying models to stand in front of me while I pretend to know what I’m going with a camera.
It’s also why I keep an eye on traffic coming in, post stuff here, on Twitter and elsewhere and dick about with SEO. Seeing people arrive on the site, hang around for a minute or two while they do whatever it is people do, then maybe come back again gives me a bit of a buzz.
Yes, I am that shallow.
And occasionally, once in a while, someone sends me a message to say “thank you” or ask a question or suggest I take a look at their corner of the web. A connection is made and the world gets a little smaller.
So no, the only reason people value traffic isn’t so we can convert to sales. Sometimes it’s just so our egos get a stroke.
