CollarSpace: end of an era or just the loss of a website?

My relationship with CollarSpace has been a bit of a love / hate one. I am deeply indebted to the site (or at least its predecessor CollarMe) because it’s where I met Tinky, with whom I fully intend on spending the rest of my life. At the same time, it was so full of fakes, haters and jerks that venturing on to it was a leap of faith. Added to that there was a painfully poor UI, it was slow and occasionally confusing.

A few times I created fake profiles of my own to sample the abuse women received on the site. I documented my research in an infographic and as you might expect, the results were pretty horrifying. So much so that I was amazed Tinky hung around long enough to connect with me!

Now the site is gearing up to be absorbed by the monster that is alt.com. A fair few have declared this to be the end of the known universe and while it’s certainly a sad day I’m not sure it’s that extreme. Yes, alt.com has been accused of using underhand techniques to upsell membership packages and my “fake account” experiments produced similar results to those from CollarSpace. Yet it seems more like a match made in heaven than an evil corporation taking over a plucky contender.

There are also those who declare this is the end of an era because there are no more “true” BDSM dating sites left. This seems to conveniently ignore the many others that lurk around the edges or who have underground kink communities in them (looking at you, OK Cupid!)

Clearly at a personal level I will have fond memories and I owe a debt to the site. Yet I doubt I’ll lose any sleep over the acquisition. This is just one site coming to the natural end of its life and being taken over by another.
