Is the “Nazi Fetish” a legitimate part of BDSM, or extremism finding a home?

A few times I’ve encountered the “Nazi Fetish“. It takes the symbolism of Hitler’s National Socialism and blends it into sadomasochism. Mostly it focuses on the uniforms, now associated with terror and unimaginable violence. Proponents are┬áseen at fetish events striding around like SS Officers in their long leather coats and britches. Some incorporate the swastika into their uniforms. Others take their fantasies beyond clothes and recreate interrogations and torture.

To many this is extremely offensive. The cultural memory of the Nazi regime creates an air where it is impossible to reconcile consensual BDSM with fetishizing mass murder. Those who wear this garb are branded as Nazis, regardless of their ethnicity or reasons.

The mantra, “your kink is not my kink, and that’s OK” is not applied here.

Kinksters vs Nazis

Undoubtably there are those who use the Nazi fetish to “openly” express their support for National Socialism. They wear the uniform and throw their right arm up in a genuine belief in the principles of “the party”. They can prowl the BDSM scene in plain sight, a perverse turn of events given the Nazi view of “sexual deviance”.

Others are so wrapped up in their kink they cannot understand the discomfort and offence they cause. They have a right to express their sexuality, a right the BDSM community has long championed. Wearing a red armband is just a part of that sexuality.

If you look you can find Nazi motifs throughout BDSM. We have literature that tells of farms and institutions that echo forced labour camps. Leather costumes abound. Submissives have their heads shaved to humiliate them, and masochists are tortured using techniques similar to those used by the Gestapo.

The fantasy is absurd, the reality is painful

But they’re disconnected from society. They are wrapped up in a fantasy that has an absurdist distance from shared experience.

Nazism is real. Millions died at their hands. The shadow of the movement is long and still blankets the world. There are people living today who survived it, or were told stories by those who did. It’s a raw, sometimes open wound.

And so we have our conflict. One hand has the horror of the Nazi regime with all its symbols and stories. The other has the fetish and its demand for tolerance. Instinctively we want to brand it as wrong and evil, but equally we must guard and protect it as a valid expression of sexuality.

Finding compromise (yes, really!)

There is a middle ground to be found here. For Nazi fetishists a greater awareness of their surroundings and the impact their play can have on others would be appreciated. Turning up at an event in full SS Uniform and armbands is going to cause widespread offence, so either don’t do it or accept there will be problems. Posting pictures of yourself or your erotica on your personal profile or website is entirely up to you.

Equally, those who encounter Nazi fetishists should display a little more tolerance. Rather than ranting at them about extremist views they may not have, move on and accept their fetish is not your fetish. The contents of their profile is their business, and unless they’re breaking the terms of service somewhere, not a reason to troll. They don’t need “educating” in what their fetish means; From the few I’ve encountered they’re more than aware and have probably struggled to reconcile their fascination and horror.

The Nazi fetish is exceptionally controversial and is something I find difficult to reconcile with themes of consent in BDSM. Equally, I accept there are people who enjoy it and see it as a core part of their sexuality without supporting Nazi ideology. My hope is those of us who are uncomfortable will have the good grace to let these fetishists enjoy themselves. I also hope Nazi fetishists will accept their kink will cause offence and limit their play to their private spaces.
