UK blocking NSFW sites is a damaging victory for the anti-porn brigade

On the 1st April the UK’s bizarre “anti-porn” law is due to come into effect. Commercial adult sites will need to have an age verification system that stops under-18s from accessing the site before they’ve proven their age. It’s been delayed twice and the noise around Brexit means communication from Government agencies has been poor.

It isn’t only UK sites that are affected. Any site that serves content to UK citizens will have to comply. If they don’t, they will be blocked.

Irony: anti-porners masturbating over their victory

In the run up to this the anti-porn crowd have already started to rear their heads. A few of the online extremists have started wetting themselves over the prospect of adults not having access to porn. More moderate voices are likely to appear in our feeds as the date draws closer, warning us of the dangers of masturbation.

This is all designed to “protect children” from seeing content they might find disturbing. It’s something every household in the UK can already do via their ISP. Only parents are unable to raise their children, so the state must step in.

The protection of the White Cliffs of Digital

The ban is adding to the sense the UK is marching towards creating its own version of the Chinese Great Firewall. Government seems more intent on closing down what its citizens can – and can’t – see. Debates about what constitutes “harmful” content are increasingly being swamped with extremist views that require any dissent to be locked down.

Scrub that. There are no longer debates in the UK. There are just shouting matches and screaming.

Meanwhile, the anti-porn crowd will claim a moral victory in their quest to suppress sexuality. Instead of healthy debates and discussions about sex, relationships and the role of porn in society, it’ll be blocked and banned and restricted. And then attention will turn to other topics that little-England can protect its citizens from.

Slowly, inexorably, the UK walks towards locking itself away from the rest of the world.
