When will BDSM “come out”?

When will BDSM “come out”?

BDSM is full of contradictions. We behave in ways wholly unacceptable to the vanilla world. We say things that would see us ostracised by friends and colleagues, and rightly so. The violence of sadomasochism and the dynamics of domination leave us exposed to accusations of abuse by those who do not understand.

Yet we are free. The feminist who campaigns tirelessly for gender equality can revel in the comfort of being submissive to a man. The rough, tough, ultra-masculine “man’s man” finds solace in feminine cross-dressing. A staunch heterosexual finds enjoyment in being “forced” to perform homosexual acts. An interracial couple thrill at insults that would brand them “racist” outside the proverbial bedroom.

We each find happiness in our own unique way.

Those outside this world do not understand it. They see the superficial violence without its loving, trusting context and react to it. Comprehending the beauty behind these relationships is impossible because they are afraid. They are afraid their worldview will be held to be invalid.

I wonder how long it will be before we see BDSM “coming out” as homosexuality has. When will we see mainstream celebrities “confessing” to enjoying bondage, sadism or masochism? At what point do we start the journey from “dirty secret” to “don’t ask, don’t tell” to “I’m a submissive/dominant/whatever”?

Sadly I don’t think it will be in my lifetime.
